The Ecosystems Lab at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is currently seeking applicants for an Internship position during the 2017 Fall and 2018 Spring semesters.  

Selected candidates will be exposed to a wide variety of research that focus on the interactions between coastal and terrestrial environments, as well as the effect humans have on those systems. 

A stipend of $350/week ($8.75/hour x 40 hours/week) will be given to interns, and housing arrangements can typically be made through the Dauphin Island Sea Lab.  Overtime pay will not be given, however, compensatory time will be assessed and allocated as accrued.

Job Requirements:

It's recommended applicants have a background in chemistry, ecology, and marine biology, as well as, a strong work ethic and eagerness to learn.  

Job Skills:

Interns will mainly be assisting graduate students and lab technicians with the various projects being carried out in the Ecosystems Lab.  These projects include the monitoring of coastal lagoons, seagrass, marsh, and mangrove habitat, and the assessment of coastal marine debris (including derelict vessels and microplastics).  All of these projects have a large field component, and interns will be trained in various sample collection and data acquisition techniques. AAUS scientific diving certification is preferred but not required.

Interns will also be trained in laboratory analysis of the samples collected in the field.  These procedures include the sorting of core samples and marine debris, seagrass/marsh vegetation morphometrics, nutrient/chlorophyll analysis, as well as, data entry and picture analysis.  Interns will also be responsible for some general lab maintenance.
