BayMobile

High School students hold specimens from BayMobile visit

The BayMobile is the Dauphin Island Sea Lab’s science classroom on wheels and it can be a part of your classroom lesson or your next event.

In the fall of 2002, the BayMobile hit the road for the first time with Dr. John Dindo and Mendel Graeber. Twenty years later, the BayMobile continues to make the rounds bringing the ocean to Alabama schools and community events. The BayMobile was created to reach students in schools that may not have the means to travel to the Dauphin Island Sea Lab Campus.

On average, the BayMobile reaches more than 13,000 additional K-12 students throughout the state. The BayMobile is also highly visible at environmental events held throughout the region with its colorful marine-themed wrapped van.

In the Classroom

Let us bring the ocean to your classroom. Discovery Hall educators travel to all 67 counties sharing the wonders of the sea with students who are unable to visit the Sea Lab in person. We seek to increase understanding, appreciation, and interest by all in Alabama’s coastal and marine areas as well as the global ocean. Whether it is through touching an octopus and seeing shark jaws, practicing observational skills by comparing species of fish, conducting a hands-on inquiry-based activity, designing plankton, or building and flying remotely operated vehicles, Sea Lab educators bring an engaging and exciting learning opportunity to your school.

If you are interested in having the BayMobile visit your school, please complete the request form here. A Discovery Hall Programs educator will contact you, discuss your learning objectives and school facilities and begin planning for a visit.

The BayMobile Classroom Visit program is made possible through the generous support of the Dauphin Island Sea Lab Foundation, the Blue Cross Blue Shield Caring Foundation, and All In Credit Union. Visits to Title I public schools are free, while visits to private schools or other learning centers require a nominal fee.

Events & Festivals

The BayMobile participates in educational, environmental, and science events and festivals in the region. Sharing our ‘Please touch’ exhibit, a short hands-on investigation, make-and-take activity, or simply their expertise, Discovery Hall educators can help to make ocean science a part of your event.

Please complete the outreach request form here. Discovery Hall will reach out to obtain more information about the event, confirm availability, and discuss logistics.

A request submission does not guarantee a visit. A DHP educator will reach out if we are able to schedule a visit with your school.
