What’s in the Water?

The water cycles over, across, and through the earth, carrying along with it a number of natural and manmade things. After an introduction to the water cycle, students will use models to
examine how water moves different things, from sand to pollutants to trash, and how man contributes to what water carries. The class will proceed outside to collect and record marine debris. The students will return to the classroom where they will use the models to brainstorm ways in which people (including the students themselves) can minimize their impacts on the ocean.

Duration: approximately 3 hours
Recommended: 5th grade to adult

What to expect:

  • Students’ feet might get wet and sandy!
  • Students should be prepared to collect marine debris along the shore.

What to wear and bring:

  • Comfortable shoes
  • Sun protection - sunscreen, hats, etc.
  • Water bottle (especially important for warm weather trips)
  • Camera (optional)
