The Dauphin Island Sea Lab Library is considered the finest library for marine science in the state of Alabama, the DISL Library is highly specialized in those areas relating to the ecology and geology of the Gulf Coast region.  It offers over 7100 books and 150 journal subscriptions to faculty, students and the general public.  The library also has electronic access to a variety of online catalogs and databases.  View holdings at http://library.disl.org
 
Book titles are grouped and cataloged by Library of Congress Classification.  To find what you are looking for, you may use the libraries online computer catalog.
  

Maps and atlases are on/in the map case located under stairwell in the Library.

  
Online databases such as Cambridge Scientific Abstracts IDS (Internet Database Service)  and First Search (and other databases available through Alabama Virtual Library) are accessible from all DISL computers connected to our Local Area Network
Serial holdings are shelved in alphabetical order by title with holdings designated on the card in chronological order.  Current issues are shelved in the display rack in the Reading Room.

Reprints are cataloged by subject and by author in separate cardex drawers. A number designating their location in the reprint collection is given for each. Reprints numbered 8703+ do not have cards but may be found in the bibliographic database Papyrus.

Library Checkouts Overnight checkout only is allowed during the summer. Library material must be returned to the librarian the following morning before class.

Loans are permitted during the academic year to resident faculty, graduate students and staff..  Short term loans, usually overnight, are allowed to students taking classes at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab.  Note:  The librarian can request Interlibrary Loan of materials not available in the Sea Lab Library.  Timely receipt of materials requested cannot be guaranteed.
A copy machine, in the library, is available for DISL use during posted hours. 
Library and computer lab computers are directly linked to the Internet.  The DISL Library makes no guarantees about the information available on the Internet.  Information from the Internet must be cited to avoid plagiarism.  Use of workstations is on a first come, first served basis and is restricted to and solely for educational use.  We do reserve the right to limit Internet access and will give priority to researchers over email and chat groups.

Library hours during the academic year are 7:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m..  Hours for spring and summer classes may vary, however they will include night and weekend hours.
