Facilities for Undergraduate and Graduate Students

The Dauphin Island Sea Lab is located on a 36-acre campus on the east end of Dauphin Island, 35 miles south of Mobile, Alabama. The facilities can accommodate over 160 persons in residence.

Support facilities include an apartment building, 2 dormitories, a cafeteria, 8 three-bedroom family houses, and a Laundromat.  Recreational facilities on campus include volleyball courts, basketball courts and a swimming pool.

Teaching facilities include 4 classroom/laboratory buildings and a library with holdings that include more than 6,800 book titles and subscriptions to 600 periodicals dealing with marine sciences. Numerous electronic bibliographic databases are available at the library.

A
computer lab equipped with Windows® PCs is located in the Administration building, in the library. A variety programs are available for use including word-processing, database management, statistical analysis. GIS and graphic presentation. Internet access is also available for staff and students.

The graduate and research programs are housed in the
Wiese Marine Science Hall, which contains 24,000 square feet of research labs and office space. Available instrumentation includes a carbon/nitrogen/sulfur analyzer, TOC, nutrient and lipid analyzers, several HPLCs and gas chromatographs, a scintillation counter, UV/VIS fluorometers and spectrophotometers. Support equipment includes balances, a refrigerated centrifuge, a lyophilizer, muffle furnaces and ovens, research grade deionized water, computer equipment and the usual complement of laboratory materials. Field gear includes high resolution CTD's and current meters, oxygen meters, plankton nets, corers, data buoys, transmissometers, water quality monitors, a variety of trawls and other nets for collecting, bottom grabs, photometers, refractometers, pH meters and a variety of water samplers.

Research vessels available for class and research activities include: the R/V A.E. Verrill, a 65-foot, diesel-powered steel hull vessel; R/V E. O. Wilson, a 45-foot, diesel-powered fiberglass hull vessel; and five additional boats (14 to 30 feet) powered by outboards.

In addition to the Dauphin Island campus, Sea Lab students have use of  253 acres of natural marsh, owned by the University of Alabama, on Point aux Pins on the north side of the Mississippi Sound. The west side of the Point is bounded by Grand Bay, one of the least polluted bodies of water on the Gulf Coast, and one of the richest habitats for bird fauna.


Housing and Cafeteria
Two dormitories (Challenger and Beagle), a two-story efficiency apartment complex with twelve units (Albatross), a cafeteria, and eight three-bedroom houses provide quarters for visiting faculty and students.

Facilities at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab have been renovated and constructed to provide access to all users. To assist DISL in accommodating any special needs that a student may have, please notify your specific Registrar before your arrival of any disabilities or conditions that require special accommodations.  Pamela Pierce  is the Registrar for Discovery Hall Programs and Sally Brennan is the Registrar for University Programs. 

Each dormitory room has two occupants and provides an individual air conditioner, twin beds, at least two closets, and a study table. Air conditioners should be operated only while the room is occupied. Visitors must provide their own linens (sheets, towels, blankets, pillows, etc.)

Washing machines and dryers are available on campus at a cost of $1.00 to wash and $1.00 to dry.

 

Information Technology
The Dauphin Island Sea Lab's Information Technology (IT) department  provides computing services supporting academic, research and administrative departments. The IT department provides a broad range of computing support for a diverse set of hardware and software, all linked through a campus wide network.

Resources Available
A shared access resource center is located in the library, in the administration building, for graduate and undergraduate students. A variety of programs for word processing, database management, statistical analysis and graphic presentation are installed on these computers. Access to the Internet is also provided. Printing, scanning and other peripheral resources are available.

Four buildings located on the South Campus provide over 9,000 square feet of classroom/laboratory facilities. 
These include:
  • Wiese Hall Classroom - Seating capacity of 50
  • Galathea - Seating capacity of 100
  • Horizon - 4 classrooms
  • Discovery - 2 classrooms
  • Endeavor - Seating capacity of 40
