Science swims to life as BayMobile’s touch lab grants audiences the unique opportunity to touch the arms of an octopus, observe the teeth of a shark, and feel the scales of native Gulf of Mexico fish species. The BayMobile is DISL's science classroom on wheels, whose mission is to visit underserved schools in the state of Alabama which do not have the opportunity or the means to visit the Dauphin Island Sea Lab on a field trip.
BayMobile seeks to increase understanding and appreciation for science and the marine environment by directly involving participants in dynamic hands-on activities. By bringing some of the beach to them, our Marine Educators spread awareness and understanding about our coastal environments, and how no matter how far from the coast, we are all connected to it.
To suit specific needs for presentations, an assortment of curricula created by the DHP Marine Educators is available. Topics available include the watershed system, plants and animals native to the Gulf Coast, and the impact of oil spills on the environment.
The BayMobile is funded by ExxonMobil and PNC Bank.
