Boardwalk Talk: Habitat Complexity and Biodiversity

Join us to talk about how different underwater habitats, such as seagrass and oyster reefs, support healthy, diverse ecosystems in our local area.

R/V Alabama Discovery Excursion

Join a professional Dauphin Island Sea Lab Educator for a two-hour boat trip in the waters surrounding Dauphin Island.

Family Camp

Family Camp is an overnight, weekend program for families to explore Dauphin Island and investigate its habitats, guided by our full-time marine educators.

Seminar: Understanding the biology of yellowfin tuna in the Tropical Eastern Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico

Inaccurate assumptions of stock structure may affect model-based investigations on the effects of climate changes on the distribution and abundance of tuna. The survival of threatened tuna relies on the ability of RFMOs and countries to manage these species properly.

SeaPerch ROV Competition

Discovery Hall Programs and UMS Wright Preparatory School will co-host the Alabama SeaPerch ROV Competition. In this competition, students drive (fly) an ROV based on the SeaPerch design that they have built to complete pool-based courses.

DISL Research Lab Guided Tour

Get a behind-the-scenes look at the research labs of the Dauphin Island Sea Lab.

Discovery Day

The open house event offers everyone the opportunity to learn about the current research our team is working on and learn more about the coastal ecosystem we live in.

Plankton in 3D: A Virtual Teacher Workshop

This virtual workshop includes three sessions all about plankton. Learn about the good (such as the oxygen we breathe or the nitrogen they make available), the bad (such as harmful algal blooms), and the ugly (wait until you see larger-than-life crab larvae!) of plankton.

Sea Lab Science Friday: Ocean Animal Biology

Drop-in field class focsued on ocean technology used to protect, clean, and explore our ocean. This class is perfect for homeschooled students, parents, and caretakers seeking enrichment opportunities.

Salt Marsh Excursion

This excursion gives you the chance to become the marine scientist for the day and get an up close look at the inhabitants of the salt marsh habitat.

Gulf Coast Graduate Student Symposium

The Graduate Student Symposium (GSS) is an annual regional conference that is alternately hosted by the Dauphin Island Sea Lab (DISL), University of Southern Mississippi (GCRL), and Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium (LUMCON).

MATE Northern Gulf Coast Regional ROV Competition

In this competition, student teams, facilitated by their teachers/mentors/coaches, design, build, and test their own unique ROV before coming to the Dauphin Island Sea Lab to compete against student teams from across the Gulf coast in a series of science-based missions.

Sea Lab Science Friday: STEM: The Ocean Version

Drop-in field class focsued on ocean technology used to protect, clean, and explore our ocean. This class is perfect for homeschooled students, parents, and caretakers seeking enrichment opportunities.

Change and resilience in Gulf of Mexico environments

Alabama’s environments seem to be experiencing stress on a number of fronts, but efforts are being made to improve our collective resilience. Join us to investigate these stresses - hearing from scientists, visiting local areas experiencing change, exploring classroom activities that address weather, climate, biodiversity, and more in coastal areas and discussing solutions and adaptations to change you can share with your learners.

Exploring STEM in the Ocean

Join us for a hands-on tour of some of the critical technologies that have dramatically increased our understanding of the marine environment. The workshop is suitable for educators working with elementary through high school students, afterschool groups, or informal learning center audiences.
